“When Stars Are Scattered”: Author Q&A Panel—May 23, 2022

68

The award-winning authors of the 2020 graphic novel “When Stars Are Scattered” are set to host an author discussion, Inclusive Dialogue: Journey Through Uncertainty, on Monday, May 23, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Merrill Hotel in Muscatine, Iowa.

“When Stars Are Scattered” is a National Book Award Finalist co-authored by Omar Mohamad, a Somalian who grew up in a Kenyan refugee camp, and Victoria Jamieson, an acclaimed writer and artist. The true story, targeted at middle-school readers, follows Mohamed’s life at the refugee camp up to 2009, when he and his younger brother, Hassan, resettled to the United States.

Together we’ll explore how heartbreak, hope and gentle humor exist together in this graphic novel about a childhood spent waiting, and a young man who is able to create a sense of family and home in the most difficult and uncertain settings.

The event will include a moderated discussion, Q&A session, and table conversations. Participants are invited to attend either in person at the Merrill Hotel, 119 W Mississippi Dr. in Muscatine, or virtually online. The event is free to the public, ages 10 and above. Youth attending in-person or virtually must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration is required to attend. Visit stanleycenter.org/inclusivedialogue to register today!
