Davenport Community Schools issued the following announcement on Dec. 1.
Although Mid City High School students are still wearing masks, signs of normalcy are lifting spirits and engaging staff and students. The first sign is the return of the Art Gallery.
The Mid City Art Gallery was not operational last year due to circumstances surrounding Covid restrictions. This year art teacher Ms. Lewis is making it her mission to guide students in the decoration of the school.
“This [Art Gallery] is part of a building beautification effort. We have installations going up on the third floor,” said Ms. Lewis.
Installations in the Art Gallery and throughout the building offer students real-world experiences. Ms. Lewis encourages students to recognize how important it is to show their art.
“They get nervous about it being there, but they love it.”
Senior Elizabeth Rieck who has a sculpture on display in the Art Gallery believes that colorful artwork makes it more fun.
It is a real-world experience for students to learn how to set up an exhibit. Ms. Lewis’s teacher assistant Rebekah Sanders set up an exhibit featuring art from Festival of Trees.
“I decided to put the gray and white together and across and the colors at the bottom so they would be together,” said Sanders. She had fun doing it and hopes to be able to do it again.
Art on display throughout Mid City High School offers everyone who walks the halls a flash of beauty and color right where they need it.
