Elm St Bridge Reconstruction to Begin

Roadwork

City of Davenport issued the following announcement on November 12.

November 12, 2021

Elm St Bridge is edging nearer to completion every day. While periodic rail traffic and recent rain combined with the site’s geography have challenged the schedule slightly, re-opening is expected in early December. Concrete is set, but the bridge remains unsafe for travel before final work is complete.  Sanitary and storm sewer work in the project zone will need to be completed before the bridge approaches can be installed. Other finish work needed includes pedestrian railing and grading below the bridge.  Keep an eye out for news of the re-opening in the coming weeks. A video of the concrete pour for the bridge will be released on Saturday on Facebook @davenportpublicworks.

Reconstruction of the Elm St Bridge is going smoothly!  The “false” temporary forms and rebar work will be complete early next week and be followed by concrete.  While hitting this milestone is great news, be aware, the bridge will not be safe for use until the concrete cures, temporary forms are removed, and sidewalks and guardrails are installed.  Look for the bridge to re-open sometime in mid-to-late November!

Work on the Elm St Bridge is moving swiftly.  Permanent foundation work is done, and the contractor has moved onto building temporary supports to form the bridge. Temporary support work will be followed by rebar installation, pouring the bridge deck and then connection to the existing road.  These final phases will take a few months, but well worth the wait when considering we will have a new and structurally sound bridge added back into the transportation network.

The Elm St Bridge Demolition is complete and the last pieces of the wood structure have been removed from the site.  With one of four new piers in place, residents should expect elevated noise to continue over the next month as the three remaining piers are driven into place.  As new piles are installed, the new piers will be encased in concrete and pier caps installed.  More updates will follow later this summer.

April 25, 2021

Work to demolish the Elm St Bridge is moving quickly. Demolition is a little over halfway complete, and the contractor may begin driving in piles for the new foundation the week of April 25. Those in the area should expect a little additional noise when crews mobilize with cranes to install the pilings. Check out these photos of what has been accomplished so far.

Ownership transfer, grants, design, bids, and right-of-way permissions now aside - work to prepare the Elm St Bridge for demolition and reconstruction will begin this week.  Many have been anxiously waiting, and the time is here.  Watch for project updates as demolition of the bridge and construction begin.  Current activities include site preparation work, including removing site obstructions and making the site ready for demolition activities.

The bridge estimated to be complete in the Fall of 2021.
