U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D., who represents Iowa’s 1st district in Congress, has posted a series of statements on social media regarding the ongoing government shutdown and related legislative actions.
On October 20, 2025, Miller-Meeks expressed concern over the impact of the shutdown, stating, "The Iowa delegation is united in calling on @SenSchumer to end his shutdown. Our troops, families, and farmers deserve better than being used as leverage for politics. It’s time to reopen the government and do what’s right for the American people."
The following day, she addressed congressional pay during shutdowns. On October 21, 2025, she wrote, "Members of Congress should not be paid during a government shutdown, especially when our troops, federal workers, and so many others are working without pay. That’s why I’m co-leading the No Budget, No Pay Act and have already chosen to withhold my own pay."
Later that day, Miller-Meeks commented on international affairs amid domestic political tensions. She stated on October 21, 2025: "Grateful that @POTUS did not allow the Schumer Shutdown to stop him from delivering a historic peace deal in the Middle East."
Miller-Meeks has served in Congress since 2021 after succeeding Dave Loebsack. She previously held office in the Iowa Senate from 2019 to 2021. Born in Herlong, California in 1955 and currently residing in Le Claire, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University.
