Mariannette Miller-Meeks criticizes Democrats over shutdown and immigration policy

U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D., currently serving Iowa’s 1st district in Congress, posted a series of statements on social media criticizing the Democratic Party’s approach to government spending and immigration policy.

On October 9, 2025, Miller-Meeks wrote, "The Democrat Party has turned its back on the men and women who defend our freedom, prioritizing taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants and $1.5 trillion in new spending instead."

The following day, she commented on the ongoing government shutdown by posting, "Day 10 of the Democrat Government Shutdown" on October 10, 2025.

Later that same day, Miller-Meeks added further criticism regarding legislative efforts to end the shutdown: "Seven times. That’s how many chances Democrats have had to stand with America’s troops, law enforcement, and working families, and seven times they’ve chosen healthcare for illegal immigrants instead. It takes 60 votes in the Senate to pass the clean CR and reopen the".

Miller-Meeks has represented Iowa's 1st District in Congress since 2021 after previously serving in the Iowa Senate from 2019 to 2021. She was born in Herlong, California in 1955 and resides in Le Claire. Before her political career, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University in 1976.
