Today, a roundtable discussion was held in Davenport, Iowa, where Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks, alongside local business leaders, discussed the importance of extending specific provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) before their expiration at the year's end. This event was organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce.
Miller-Meeks is advocating for action to forestall what would be "the largest automatic tax increase in American history" should Congress fail to act. She is particularly focused on preventing a substantial tax increase for Iowa's 1st District constituents by the end of 2025.
"I was delighted to be with local business owners as we advocate together for an extension of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” Miller-Meeks stated. She pointed out that not extending the tax cuts could result in a "devastating 25% average tax hike on Iowa families, farmers, and small businesses," which are vital to the region's economic health.
Peter Tokar III, President and CEO of the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce, remarked on the legislative progress, noting, "With Congress passing budget language earlier this month, the hard work of developing a tax package that avoids a historic tax hike on small business is underway." Tokar emphasized their collaboration with Miller-Meeks in supporting tax policies beneficial to small businesses.
The roundtable is part of the U.S. Chamber's Growing America’s Future campaign, which is geared toward advocating for a pro-growth tax code to support a strong U.S. economy. This initiative will continue with events in various communities nationwide in the following months.
