The House of Representatives has approved H.R. 22, known as the SAVE Act, aimed at reinforcing voting processes by ensuring that only U.S. citizens can register to vote in federal elections. Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), an original cosponsor, highlighted the importance of the legislation, describing it as a safeguard for American elections.
"American elections should be decided by American citizens—that's what this bill guarantees," Miller-Meeks stated. She emphasized the bill as a "commonsense measure" requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections, and expressed her support for providing states with necessary tools to prevent non-citizens from being added to voter rolls.
In a previous session, the SAVE Act received bipartisan support in the House but was halted by Senate Democrats. The recent passage in the House coincides with President Trump's return to the presidency, with House Republicans determined to see the bill enacted into law. The initiative remains pending further advancement in the Senate.
