Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Debbie Dingell have introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at expanding access to dental insurance for Americans. The Increasing Access to Dental Insurance Act seeks to provide affordable dental coverage through the federal marketplace.
Dr. Miller-Meeks stated, “Consistent, prophylactic dental care is necessary for robust oral health and hygiene.” She emphasized the importance of promoting affordable dental insurance as part of better health access and outcomes for Americans.
Rep. Dingell highlighted the link between oral health and overall well-being, noting that lack of dental care can lead to systemic health issues like heart disease and diabetes. “The Increasing Access to Dental Insurance Act will expand access to critical dental coverage through the federal marketplace,” she said.
Currently, individuals cannot purchase dental coverage on the federal marketplace without enrolling in a qualified health plan. This bill aims to remove that restriction, thereby increasing competition and access to affordable oral health services.
In states with state-based marketplaces, such as Iowa, consumers can buy dental plans independently of medical plans. This option benefits those with employer-provided medical coverage but lacking dental insurance. However, this choice is unavailable in states using the federal marketplace.
The legislation has garnered support from several groups including the American Association of Kidney Patients, American Council of Life Insurers, Delta Dental Plans Association, Families USA, National Kidney Foundation, among others.
