The Laken Riley Act, advocated by Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa's 1st Congressional District, has successfully passed the House and is now awaiting final approval from President Trump. This legislation aims to ensure that illegal aliens charged or convicted of theft are detained to prevent further incidents, referencing the individual involved in Laken Riley’s death. Additionally, it includes Sarah’s Law, which mandates U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal aliens involved in killing or severely injuring American citizens.
"Laken Riley and Sarah Root should still be here today," stated Rep. Miller-Meeks. "Illegal aliens, like the ones who took their lives, have no business in this country. This bill ensures they are held accountable and kept off our streets, never to hurt another American. Under President Trump’s leadership, law and order is being restored, and we are putting American safety first. I look forward to seeing this bill signed into law to protect our families and secure our nation."
The House initially passed H.R. 29 on January 7th with opposition from 159 Democrats. The Senate introduced amendments that included significant provisions such as Sarah’s Law to enhance protections for Americans while holding illegal aliens accountable for violent crimes.
The legislation now proceeds to President Trump's desk for his signature.
