City of Bettendorf issued the following announcement on Feb. 20.
At last night's City Council meeting, Chief Kimball and Mayor Bob Gallagher presented a Letter of Commendation to one of our employees! Chief Kimball said "I would like to recognize and present a Letter of Commendation to Public Works Employee James Bornemann who spotted two suspicious individuals on 9/30/2019 engaged in suspicious activity in the area of Magnolia Drive, north of Hillside Dr. and south of Summit Hills Dr. while on his recycling route and calling it in to police. These individuals stashed their back packs into a resident’s recycle bin for an unknown reason and then were seen walking around meandering in the back yards of this residential area for unknown reasons. They came running back to get their back packs when the recycle truck was about to dispose of their bags and then headed north on foot. James immediately called 911 and police were dispatched to the area.
Our officers were able to relocate them walking on Utica Ridge Rd., north of Spruce Hills Drive, and got out with them and investigated further. Based on their investigation our patrol officers were able to take them into custody arresting them on some significant felony drug charges related to possession of methamphetamine and possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine. One of them had three fixed bladed knives in their back pack. It was never determined exactly what they were up to when first observed."
