Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa’s 1st District has joined other lawmakers in expressing support for the Trump Administration’s actions to maintain nutrition assistance during the ongoing government shutdown. In a letter addressed to Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, Miller-Meeks and her colleagues commended the administration for ensuring continued funding for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.
The WIC program supports more than 6.7 million participants across the country, including over 62,000 women and children in Iowa each month. Miller-Meeks stated, “The Administration’s leadership is making sure that low-income mothers and children are not punished because of Chuck Schumer and the Democrats’ gridlock. Iowa Families who depend on WIC should never have to worry about whether they can afford formula, food, or diapers because Democrats decided healthcare for illegal immigrants was more important.”
The letter pointed out that Senate Democrats have voted against a continuing resolution that would have kept the government open, while the administration has acted to protect nutrition programs by using available funding sources.
Miller-Meeks added, “Families should not bear the consequences of inaction in Washington. As a mother and physician, I know how vital early nutrition is for children’s health and development. I’m grateful to President Trump and Secretary Rollins for stepping up to make sure no family goes without support during this shutdown.”
Miller-Meeks has represented Iowa’s 1st District in Congress since 2021, after previously serving in the Iowa Senate. She was born in Herlong, California in 1955 and currently resides in Le Claire. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University.
