Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa’s 1st District expressed support for President Trump’s recent decision to protect nutrition assistance programs during the ongoing government shutdown. Miller-Meeks stated, “President Trump once again stepped up to lead where Democrats failed. While Democrats shut down the government to push reckless spending and taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants, President Trump is protecting the more than 62,000 Iowans who rely on WIC. He’s standing up for American families while Democrats continue to put illegal immigrants ahead of them.”
The Trump Administration announced it would allocate available funds to ensure that families dependent on the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) would continue receiving support during the shutdown. This action is intended to help low-income mothers and children avoid disruptions in aid.
Miller-Meeks voted in favor of a bipartisan continuing resolution that aimed to fund the government for seven weeks without increasing spending or adding partisan provisions. The bill passed in the House with bipartisan support but was rejected by Senate Democrats, who sought additional spending and healthcare benefits for undocumented immigrants.
Miller-Meeks has represented Iowa’s 1st District in Congress since 2021 after succeeding Dave Loebsack. Before her current role, she served in the Iowa Senate from 2019 to 2021. Born in Herlong, California in 1955, Miller-Meeks resides in Le Claire and holds a BSN from Texas Christian University.
The administration’s move seeks to ensure that WIC recipients nationwide will not face interruptions due to the funding impasse.
