Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D., currently serving Iowa’s 1st congressional district, posted a series of statements on social media regarding the ongoing government shutdown and the role of Democrats in the process.
On September 30, 2025, Miller-Meeks wrote, "If Democrats force a government shutdown, I will not take a paycheck while our troops, veterans, and families are at risk of losing theirs. Service means sacrifice, and Democrats shouldn’t be putting their political games ahead of the American people."
Later that day, she followed up with another post stating, "Democrats just voted for the second time to shut down the government and reject the bipartisan, clean CR that would keep it open. They chose healthcare for illegal immigrants over our military, veterans, seniors, farmers, and families. More info https://t.co/g6KiH8gYKe" This tweet was published on October 1, 2025.
In a third message on October 1, Miller-Meeks asserted: "Make no mistake: this is a Democrat Government Shutdown https://t.co/lzud1x3IaY"
Miller-Meeks has served in Congress since 2021 after replacing Dave Loebsack and previously held office in the Iowa Senate from 2019 to 2021. Born in Herlong, California in 1955 and currently residing in Le Claire at age 67, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University (TCU), earned in 1976.
The current debate centers around disagreements over funding measures to keep the federal government operational. Miller-Meeks’ comments reflect partisan tensions regarding priorities such as military pay and healthcare provisions during budget negotiations.
