Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D., a U.S. Congresswoman representing Iowa’s 1st district since 2021, recently addressed issues of crime and international diplomacy in a series of posts on her official social media account.
On September 8, 2025, Miller-Meeks wrote about the death of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee: "23-year-old Iryna Zarutska escaped war in Ukraine, only to be murdered here in America. She survived Russia’s bombs but couldn’t survive Democrat policies that keep career criminals on the streets. If Democrats had their way, Iowa would be next, forced into the same failed".
Later that day, she provided additional details regarding the suspect involved in Zarutska's case: "The man who murdered Iryna has 14 prior arrests and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Earlier this year, he told officers that he believed there was 'man-made' materials inside his body controlling his eating, walking and talking while being arrested. Does this sound like".
In another post dated September 9, 2025, Miller-Meeks discussed foreign affairs following a meeting with Azerbaijan’s ambassador: "It was an honor to meet with Azerbaijans Ambassador Ibrahim and discuss the recent Azerbaijan–Armenia peace agreement brokered by @POTUS. This agreement is a major step toward stability in the region, and I appreciated the opportunity to hear directly about its impact and the".
Miller-Meeks has represented Iowa’s 1st District since replacing Dave Loebsack in Congress in 2021. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she served in the Iowa Senate from 2019 to 2021. Born in Herlong, California in 1955 and currently residing in Le Claire, Miller-Meeks earned her BSN from Texas Christian University in 1976.
