U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks met with law enforcement and emergency medical service leaders in Lee County, Iowa, to discuss ways to better support first responders. The discussion addressed challenges related to recruitment and retention, funding for emergency services, and the impact of provisions in the recent reconciliation package. These provisions include a policy of no tax on overtime pay and expanded training support for first responders.
"Hearing directly from Iowa’s law enforcement officers and EMS personnel is essential to ensuring they have the tools and resources they need," said Miller-Meeks. "From tackling recruitment challenges to delivering tax relief on overtime pay and expanding training opportunities, I will always stand with our first responders. They put their lives on the line for us, and I will continue fighting to make sure they are supported."
Miller-Meeks has emphasized her ongoing efforts to back law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS personnel both in Southeast Iowa and across the country. She noted that delivering resources and tax relief through reconciliation aims to strengthen emergency services while focusing on local needs.
Mariannette Miller-Meeks has represented Iowa’s 1st district in Congress since 2021 after succeeding Dave Loebsack. Before her time in Congress, she served in the Iowa Senate from 2019 to 2021. Miller-Meeks was born in Herlong, California in 1955, is currently 67 years old, resides in Le Claire, and graduated from Texas Christian University with a BSN in 1976.
