Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D., who represents Iowa’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, has highlighted recent legislative developments and local history in a series of posts on X during August 2025.
On August 10, Miller-Meeks addressed the issue of farmland succession in Iowa, stating, "20M of Iowa’s 30M acres of farmland are owned by people 65+, and nearly 40% by those 75+. Thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill, these farms can be passed to the next generation without being taxed into extinction. Land should stay in Iowa families, not in the hands of the" (August 10, 2025).
Later that day, she commemorated a notable figure from Iowa's past: "Today we honor the birthday of Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States and the only president born in Iowa. His birthplace, West Branch, is home to the Hoover Presidential Library, Historic Site, and Foundation, an important part of Iowa’s history." (August 10, 2025).
On August 11, Miller-Meeks discussed tax reforms impacting small businesses: "Thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill’s pro-growth, pro–small business tax reforms, 63,780 small businesses in my District will benefit from an increased 199A Qualified Business Income deduction, letting them keep more of what they earn!" (August 11, 2025).
Miller-Meeks has served as a member of Congress for Iowa’s 1st district since replacing Dave Loebsack in 2021. She previously held a seat in the Iowa Senate from 2019 to 2021 and was born in Herlong, California. Now residing in Le Claire at age 67, Miller-Meeks earned her BSN from Texas Christian University in 1976.
