Today, in Washington, D.C., Senate Republicans confirmed Dan Bishop as the Deputy Director for the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) following a party-line vote. U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), who is the Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, issued a statement expressing his disapproval of Bishop's confirmation. Merkley, along with all the Democrats on the committee, opposed the nomination of Bishop.
"The law is not a suggestion, and the president is not a king. Government officials swear an oath to the Constitution, not an oath to Donald Trump or Russell Vought," stated Senator Merkley. "Mr. Bishop has said he is willing to violate the law and Constitution if that’s what Donald Trump wants. This is far beyond disqualifying, and Dan Bishop is unfit to serve at OMB."
Senator Merkley's remarks highlight significant concerns about Bishop's approach to his duties at OMB, particularly emphasizing loyalty to the Constitution over individual political figures.
