U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D. (IA-01) recently attended COP28 as part of a bipartisan Energy and Commerce delegation. The purpose of the delegation was to advocate for Iowa and agriculture issues at the conference held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Leading the delegation was Energy and Commerce Committee Vice Chair Kelly Armstrong (R-ND).

During her time at COP28, Miller-Meeks had the opportunity to speak at the U.S. Pavilion, where she highlighted the important role that Iowa farmers play in fueling the world with lower carbon, cleaner emissions liquid fuels. She emphasized how Iowa is utilizing its unique geographic composition and natural attributes to support a wide range of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, ethanol, biodiesel, biomass, and more.

"I was honored to represent our district and our agricultural priorities at COP28," said Miller-Meeks. "Our farmers in Iowa and across the United States are the backbone of this country and our economy. Iowa is a leading producer of soybeans, corn, pork, and eggs, and we are also making strides in reducing fertilizer and pesticide use through sustainable regenerative agricultural practices."

Miller-Meeks expressed her excitement about continuing to share the story of how Iowa is becoming a role model in creating energy systems that reduce emissions and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.

The participation of Miller-Meeks and the Energy and Commerce delegation in COP28 demonstrates the commitment of Iowa's representatives to supporting the state's farmers and advocating for sustainable agricultural practices. Their presence at the conference serves as a platform to showcase Iowa's contributions to the renewable energy sector and the importance of agriculture in addressing climate change.
