Alumni Spotlight: Robbie Poston '16

199

Saint Ambrose University recently issued the following announcement.

Checking in with St. Ambrose alumni is always a joy, especially when they pursue intriguing career paths after graduation. For instance, Robbie Poston ‘16 used his theatre degree much differently than most Ambrose graduates and perhaps he can serve as an inspiration for current students.

Poston began his journey at St. Ambrose in 2012. However, he actually entered as an Education and Biology Major, but quickly transitioned to the Theatre Department.

"It took me a semester to get involved in the department," Poston explained. "I was involved in the strike for the show Les Liaison Dangereuses and after that I was involved in almost every show until I graduated."

For the next three and a half years, Poston wore many hats in the St. Ambrose University Theatre Department, working hard on and off stage. Some of his most notable roles here include The White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, the Props Master for Spamalot, the Lighting Designer for Working and Glengarry Glen Ross, and the Director of the studio show Beyond Therapy. Still, the most interesting part of his career was yet to come.

CLASS OF 2016

Among the jobs Poston had after graduation, one of them was an electrician for the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus!

After graduation, Poston, like many graduates, was unsure of what he specifically wanted to pursue with his theatre degree until he came across the chance to work for the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. He secured the job and worked as an electrician there for one year.

"Acting was fun for me, but it wasn't a true passion, my true passion is paying my bills and having fun!" Poston exclaimed. "While with the circus I lived on a train, hung out with tigers, pied clowns ... you know the classics."

After his circus days, Robbie still found excitement in his work as he bounced around a bunch of different jobs. He worked on various cruise ships and even with Disney on Ice. Now, Poston works as a project coordinator for a live event company in Chicago. However, even though he has traveled far and wide, pursuing multiple fascinating career paths, he still thinks fondly of his time as a student at St. Ambrose.

"Ambrose is not a large school, but it is a passionate school and the Theatre Department reflects this," Poston said. "Its small size doesn't matter when the professors and the students put their hearts and souls into everything they do. By far the most important thing my time in the Ambrose Theatre Department taught me was how to learn, not what to know, but how to learn."

The St. Ambrose University Theatre Department is incredibly proud of all that Poston has accomplished and we can't wait to hear about his future endeavors. We wish him the best of luck in his pursuit to pay his bills and have fun!
