Leading into the election, Muscatine County law enforcement officials were focused on providing a safe environment for voters.
Although no credible threats have been reported, law enforcement was taking making certain no issues would arise amid a contentious presidential race, the Muscatine Journal reported. Incidents within the past year of Davenport and Iowa City have made local officials wary of a similar occurrence. There have been some reports of vandalism of campaign signs within the last month which both parties have taken time to condemn.
The Journal reported some possible concerns in the election were citizens taking advantage of their rights to be armed at the polls, disputes over wearing face coverings and disagreements over whether a person is registered to vote. Law enforcement officials also were taking care to prevent disorderly displays. The sheriff’s office provided a presence in unincorporated areas with a polling site. In Wilton, the police department had extra people on call in case of any unexpected issues.
