The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has been extended in Scott County by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, WQAD 8 ABC reported.
The program was implemented in Iowa when the derecho hit the state in August. It came on Aug. 10 and left a significant amount of damage in its path.
The program hasn't just been extended in Scott County. Polk, Boone, Jasper, Poweshiek, Story, Marshall, Benton, Cedar and Tama counties will also benefit from the extension.
Through the program, low-income residents and those affected by the storm can receive food assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“Now that 10 additional counties have been declared disaster areas, we have another resource we can provide hard-hit residents trying to recover from the devastation,” U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue told WQAD 8 ABC. “This administration will continue working closely with Iowans to make sure they get the food they need.”
Eligible households will be able to receive a month's worth of benefits from the program.
