Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Dec. 15.
The Felix Adler Children's Discovery Center, "Clinton, Iowa's Children's Museum!” is celebrating the holidays with festive programming including a reindeer romp, making snow globes, and a final visit with Santa. This week also brings a Pizza Hut fundraising night.
Pizza Hut Fundraising Night: Tuesday, December 15
Pizza Hut on North Second Street, in Clinton, will hold a fundraising night for the non-profit children’s museum Tuesday, December 15, from 5 to 7 p.m., and the public is encouraged to eat good food for a good cause.
Customers can order pizza for delivery or carry out. Carry out service is particularly easy for customers as Pizza Hut employees bring the pizzas out to the customers’ cars for convenience. The Discovery Center will receive 20% of everything sold during the two-hour fundraiser.
Funtime Friday, December 18 & Funtime Saturday, December 19: Reindeer Romp
This week at Funtime Friday, December 18 and Funtime Saturday, December 19, young children and their families will enjoy a festive reindeer romp. Everyone will learn the classic song and then launch on a holiday scavenger hunt throughout the Discovery Center.
The program begins promptly at 10:30 a.m. No advanced registration is needed, and participation is free with regular museum admission. Families participating will be socially distanced and masks are required.
Funtime programming is sponsored by Kiwanis Clubs of Clinton, Camanche and Fulton.
Funtime is the Discovery Center’s long-running morning program for young children and their caregivers. It is literacy-based and designed to support the developmental needs and school success skills of young children, although all ages are always welcome. Each week brings a different theme which is explored through reading a story book and engaging in related activities. Weekly activities are varied and include music, dance and movement, science experiments or demonstrations, holiday and cultural fun, arts and craft creations, guest presenters, biology and nature, guided exploration throughout the children’s museum, or others.
Saturday Special Program -- Make A Snow Globe
Saturday Special is held every Saturday afternoon, from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. This Saturday, December 19,
children and their families can make a snow globe to keep or give as a gift. The Discovery Center’s own crafter-in-chief, Miss Elyse, will lead participants in using glass baby food jars, Christmas tree ornaments and glitter to assemble wintery creations.
The program is geared for school-aged children and their grown-ups although all ages are always welcome. This program requires no advance registration and participation is free with regular museum admission. Families participating will be socially distanced and masks are required.
A Final Visit with Santa, Sunday, December 20
Santa will make his final stop at the Discovery Center on Sunday, December 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. This event is sponsored by long-time children’s museum supporter Krumpets Bakery & Café.
Santa’s “house” at the Discovery Center is lavishly decorated with a giant tree, lighted garlands overhead, and a glittering backdrop. This year, an oversized stone fireplace provides the perfect focal point for a distanced visit. Santa will sit in his chair on one side of the fireplace, and children can sit in a second large chair on the other side of the fireplace. In fact, the visitor’s chair is big enough for the whole family. The setting offers a perfect photo opportunity so plan to bring a camera.
Each child will be given a wrapped Krumpets Bakery cookie to take home.
This event requires no advance registration and is free with regular museum admission. All Discovery Center guests ages two and older must wear a mask during their visit.
The New Way to Stay Safe and Play
The Discovery Center is open adjusted hours and is following a procedure for “the new way to stay safe and play.” Hours are Fridays and Saturdays with a morning play period from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and an afternoon play period from 2:30 to 5 p.m. The mid-day closure is a time for museum staff to sanitize and disinfect all surfaces and to replace all toys and costumes.
On Sundays, the Discovery Center is open for an afternoon play period from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Toy rotation, sanitizing and disinfecting is done again at the end of each day.
Museum admission is $4 per person ages two to 64, $3 per person ages 65 and older, free for children one and younger, and free for members of the children's museum.
Properly worn face masks are required for everyone ages two and older. Guests may wear their own masks or they may get one at the Discovery Center. Disposable masks are available for purchase for $1. If cloth face masks are preferred, they are available to rent for $1. The cloth masks were hand-sewn for the Discovery Center by the Clinton County Mask Task Force volunteers.
Guests are asked not to bring in food or snacks to be eaten during general playtimes. The only food allowed is for scheduled private parties held inside the closed party rooms.
Also, as a precaution, members of the public who are experiencing fever, cough, shortness of breath, other coronavirus symptoms or who have been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, are asked not to enter the Discovery Center at this time.
The mission of the Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center is to provide a safe and positive environment for families to discover the world by exploring arts, culture, literacy and science through educational programs and interactive exhibits. They turn no one away based on inability to pay.
The Discovery Center is located at 332 8th Avenue South in downtown Clinton, Iowa, at the foot of the U.S. 30 Bridge over the mighty Mississippi – where the Lincoln Highway meets the Great River Road.
